2019-2020: What were the backgrounds of Copiah County students?

Of the 3,964 students enrolled in Copiah County schools in 2019-2020, 66.7% were Black or African American, according to the Mississippi Department of Education. This was the most represented ethnicity among Copiah County students.

This is a 2.1% decrease from the previous school year.

Hazlehurst Elementary School had the highest enrollment of Black or African American students in the 2019-2020 school year.

A snapshot of Copiah County schools showed 66.7% students were Black or African American, 23% were White, 8.5% were Hispanic or Latino and 0.3% were Two or More Races.

There are seven schools in Copiah County.

Mississippi has continually struggled with public education. The most recent Report Card on American Education, from a right-leaning think tank, gave the state a C-. This is consistent with ratings stretching back nearly one decade.

The nonpartisan Education Week also ranked Mississippi schools as C- in their most recent analysis.
