Runs in the Ninth Prevent Braves Shutout

Lamar University jumped out to an early lead against the Alcorn State baseball team to defeat the Braves, 11-2, in a midweek contest. Alcorn moves to 1-7 on the season, while the Cardinals remain undefeated with a 9-0 record.

Lamar started the game strong, with the lead-off batter Kevin Bermudez connecting for a home run to left field. The following four batters also made it to base, eventually leading to a five-run inning for the Cardinals.

Lamar continued its effort, adding a single run in the fourth and sixth inning and four runs in the eighth for 11 total.

Entering the top of the ninth, the Braves were down 11-0, but they were not deterred. Alcorn fought to score two runs in the closing frame of the game.

CJ Chatman led off the inning with a base on balls and advanced to second on a single from Nathan Gamez. Jermel Ford entered the contest to pinch run for Chatman, and he and Gamez advanced one base on a sacrifice bunt from Jack Butler.

Ford scored the Braves first run on an error by the Cardinal shortstop, and Gamez made it home on an error by the catcher for a final score of 11-2.

Garret Palladino led Alcorn at the plate with a 3-for-2 appearance, and Trey Adams was credited with the Braves only RBI.

Austin Guzman took the loss on the mound, throwing for one inning with five hits against, one walk, one strikeout, and five runs (three earned).
