IHL honors Alcorn’s Dr. Ping Zhang for advocating for diversity

Mississippi higher education leaders recognized an Alcorn State University faculty member for promoting diversity.

Dr. Ping Zhang, chair and professor of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, was honored for advancing diversity at the University during the Mississippi Board of Trustees of the State Institutions of Higher Learning’s (IHL) annual Diversity and Inclusion Awards Ceremony Thursday, Feb. 16, in Jackson, Mississippi.

In honor of Black History Month, IHL recognized campus and community leaders for their efforts in advancing diversity in the state.

The award furthers the state’s efforts in recognizing minorities for their career success. Zhang is happy to be a part of the movement.

“It is a great honor to receive this prestigious award while representing Alcorn State University,” said Zhang. “This award encourages significant advocacy for advancing diversity at Alcorn and the state of Mississippi. It motivates me to continue to advocate for diversity in all walks of life.”

Dr. Babu Patlolla, dean of the Department, applauded Zhang for what he does for the University and his efforts to improve diversity.

“It’s a well-deserving award for Dr. Zhang,” said Patlolla. “Dr. Zhang plays a critical role in promoting diversity. He keeps the course offerings and curriculum contemporary. He also mentors students and helps them to pursue careers in a diverse and global workplace.”
