Women's Basketball Blasts MVSU, 74-51
The Alcorn State women's basketball team blows past conference-foe Mississippi Valley State University, 74-51, to improve to 9-13 overall and 5-6 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Zy'Nyia White led the Lady Braves, posting a season-high 21 points Monday night inside the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
White, a sophomore guard from Hazlehurst, Miss., went 9-for-14 from the floor, including 3-for-4 in three point-range. Senior forward Tyginae Wright added 16 points to the effort, while Destiny Brown put up nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
As a squad, the Lady Braves shot 49.2 percent from the floor, 33.3 percent from beyond the arc, and just 44.4 percent at the free-throw line. Alcorn outscored Mississippi Valley in the paint 28-10 and had a more productive bench, 19-6.
The Lady Braves came out the gate hot, with Nakia Cheatham scoring on back-to-back jumpers to give Alcorn a 4-0 advantage with less than two minutes off the clock. The Lady Braves kept the momentum for the remainder of the contest and never gave up the lead.
The largest lead came in the fourth quarter with just eight minutes left. Kiarra Henderson made two shots at the free-throw line to give Alcorn a 28-point lead (64-36).
The Lady Braves spent the remainder of the time draining the clock to defeat MVSU, 74-51.
