Prairie View A&M defeated Alcorn State 7-0 on April 18, completing a Southwestern Athletic Conference softball series sweep at Lady Panthers Softball Stadium.

The win strengthens Prairie View’s position in the conference, moving their record to 25-14 overall and 17-1 in SWAC play. Alcorn State falls to 13-30 overall and 1-17 in the conference.

Prairie View took an early lead, scoring in each of the first five innings. First baseman Caidence Martin drove in Isabela Rodriguez for the opening run. Kayla Zaid added an RBI bunt single and Martin contributed another run-scoring hit as Prairie View led 3-0 after three innings. The Panthers extended their lead with two more runs in the fourth from Zaid and Rodriguez RBI singles, then added two additional runs in the fifth inning through hits by Hannah Comeaux and Martiza Martinez.

Zaid finished with two hits and two RBIs while Rodriguez had two hits, one RBI, and a stolen base. Martin went two-for-two with two RBIs before being replaced mid-game. On the mound, Madalyne Martinez earned her first win of the season after pitching over three innings without allowing a run; Gabrielle Larson and Caden Young combined to finish out the shutout for Prairie View.

Alcorn’s offense was limited to five hits on the day. Left fielder Yahnya Acevedo recorded two of those hits while Jamyiyah Cotten, Rajayla McBride, and Karmen Bernard each singled once. Pitcher Chiara Olison took her sixteenth loss of the season after giving up all seven runs across six innings pitched.

Alcorn State will continue its road trip with a nonconference game against Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday, April 21.
