Prairie View A&M defeated Alcorn State in both games of a Southwestern Athletic Conference softball doubleheader on April 17 at Lady Panthers Softball Stadium in Prairie View, Texas. The Panthers won the first game 8-3 and the second game 12-0.
The outcome affects conference standings as Prairie View improved its record while Alcorn State continued to struggle within the SWAC.
In the opening game, Dyani McKinley led Prairie View by going three-for-three with a home run, a double, and three runs batted in. McKinley also contributed two stolen bases and scored twice. Kayla Adams pitched all seven innings for the Panthers, allowing three runs on twelve hits and striking out three batters. For Alcorn State, Yahnya Acevedo had three hits while Rajayla McBride went two-for-four with two runs scored.
Alcorn briefly tied the score at one in the second inning after Ka’Miya Dillon drove in McBride. However, Prairie View regained control with multiple scoring innings including a solo home run by McKinley to secure their win.
In game two, Prairie View sent fourteen batters to the plate during an eleven-run first inning. Reagan Green recorded three RBIs while Mia Nunez added a triple and a double with one RBI. Yazmyn Stewart earned her ninth win of the season for Prairie View by pitching four shutout innings. Mariah Morgan was notable for Alcorn by going two-for-two at bat.
The series is scheduled to conclude Saturday at noon at Lady Panthers Softball Stadium.
