The game saw Alcorn (13-27) take an early lead with two runs in the first inning, but Memphis (15-30) responded with three runs in the second and maintained control for the rest of the contest. Deana Cunningham of Memphis hit a two-out, three-run home run off Alcorn starter Alainah Felton during that inning, giving her team a 4-2 advantage.
Avery Stutts earned the win for Memphis by pitching four innings of one-hit, shutout relief. She retired 13 out of 14 batters faced and struck out three. Jasmine Chavez started for Memphis but was replaced after allowing two runs without yielding a hit. Rylee Dugar pitched before Stutts took over.
Memphis players Taylor Caton and Faith Brown contributed extra-base hits, while four Tigers—Isabella Hune, Ariel Davis, Kylie Waldrep, and Paris Brienesse—each stole a base. Felton took the loss for Alcorn after allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits over three innings. Chiara Olison finished the game for Alcorn by pitching three innings and giving up two runs.
Rajayla McBride led Alcorn offensively by going 2-for-2 with a stolen base. Karmen Bernard and Jamyiyah Cotten each scored a run for Alcorn, which did not score after its first-inning surge and went hitless with runners in scoring position.
Alcorn is scheduled to play next against Prairie View A&M—the Southwestern Athletic Conference Western Division leader—in Prairie View, Texas from April 17 to April 18.
