Alcorn State University concluded its softball season on April 24 with a Senior Day celebration and a series of games against Arkansas-Pine Bluff at the Alcorn Softball Complex in Lorman, Mississippi. The day featured three games, including the completion of a previously delayed matchup from March.
The event held significance as it marked both the end of the regular season and an opportunity to honor departing seniors Yahnya Acevedo, Jamyiyah Cotten, Ka’Miya Dillon, Mariah Morgan, and student assistant Ryan Thompson. The team recognized their contributions during “Senior Appreciation Day.”
In Friday’s opening game, Arkansas-Pine Bluff (UAPB) secured a 6-4 win over Alcorn by scoring five runs in the second inning. Lyric Perry led off with a solo home run for UAPB, while Janiah Wilson added a two-run triple. Alcorn responded with runs from Chiara Olison and Rajayla McBride but ultimately left ten runners stranded.
A continuation of an earlier postponed game saw Alcorn edge out UAPB 7-6 in nine innings for one of their final victories of the season. In another contest that afternoon—serving as the makeup for a previously scheduled game—UAPB defeated Alcorn again by an 8-6 margin after building an early lead through strong hitting from Wilson and Gaddis.
Throughout these matchups, standout performances came from both teams’ key players. For Alcorn, Dillon recorded three hits and two runs scored in her final appearance as a Brave; Acevedo contributed multiple RBIs; Bernard added two hits including a double.
As the Braves wrap up their season with recognition for graduating seniors and hard-fought games against conference rivals, attention now turns to future seasons and continued support for athletes within Braves Athletics.
