Alcorn State Braves softball will play its last midweek nonconference game of the regular season against Southeastern Louisiana on April 21 at North Oak Park in Hammond, Louisiana.
The matchup serves as a key preparation for Alcorn ahead of their upcoming Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) series. Head Coach Brianna Billie will not be present for the remainder of the season as she is close to giving birth to her first child.
Billie said, “Southeastern Louisiana is playing really well right now, and we know that going in. But I think this is exactly the kind of game we need to prepare ourselves for what’s ahead in conference play in this upcoming final weekend. We’re not going to shy away from the challenge of a team that is red-hot and already clinched their regular season title.”
She also said, “I’ve been really proud of how our girls have competed this season. We’re going into Hammond with confidence. We know it’s their house, but we’ve been putting in the work, and Tuesday night is our chance to show what we’re made of.” Billie described the contest as a measuring stick before focusing on Arkansas-Pine Bluff: “This is the last nonconference game before we shift our full focus to UAPB and a crucial series. So, it’s a great measuring stick for us. Playing a hot team on the road tells you a lot about your program’s character. I’m excited to see how we respond.” She added, “We want to build momentum heading into the weekend, and there’s no better way to do that than going into a tough environment and competing against a team essentially ranked in the top 30 of the nation. Our goal is always to play Alcorn softball – play hard, play smart, and play together.”
Southeastern Louisiana has secured its Southland Conference regular season title with a 22-2 league record under Head Coach Trena Prater’s second year leading the program. The Lions have received votes in several national polls after winning 25 straight games earlier this year before losing narrowly last week.
Historically, Southeastern Louisiana leads Alcorn 34-1 all-time and has won nineteen consecutive games since 2015 between these teams.
Looking forward, Alcorn will host Arkansas-Pine Bluff next weekend during Senior Appreciation Weekend while concluding suspended SWAC contests.
